Juggling work and family commitments and managing a football team is no mean feat. Add in part-time study to the mix and a lot of careful planning is required.

Manager of the Mayo Senior Football team, James Horan, undertook a part-time BSc. (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science online through IT Sligo from 2006 to 2008, and the flexible nature of the programme meant he could fit it around his hectic schedule, he says.

“I was working full-time and involved with teams at the time but the fact that the course was online made it possible for me. You could do it in your own time and work it around your own schedule.”

IT Sligo’s reputation for online programmes was also a draw, he said; “IT Sligo is very well set up in the online area. The lectures and supporting information is very easy to access and the lecturers are very good.”

Working in the quality area with a multinational company, the Mayo Manager had a previous qualification in Science from the early nineties but returned to education to up-skill with an honours degree; “Up-skilling is useful for personal development, and for promotional prospects it’s definitely an advantage,” he said.
