Sad Passing Of Two Students

On behalf of the IT Sligo community, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of two of our students who tragically passed away at the weekend.

Adam Mulchrone, 21 was in his first year at IT Sligo and was a dedicated and popular student.  Adam was a very talented footballer and played for the IT Sligo soccer team and for his hometown of Westport.  Adam sadly passed away from suspected meningitis over the weekend and we are working with the HSE to ensure that all appropriate health measures are taken with his fellow students. The HSE advises us that if anyone has any concerns on any health matters, they should contact their GP in the first instance and of course IT Sligo continues to provide medical advice to Adam’s class mates over the coming days and months.

Before we could even begin to take in this tragic news we were notified of the death of another of our students.  John Harley, aged just 24, from Fál Carragh, Co. Donegal was one of the four victims who died in the terrible car crash in Gweedore. John was an electrical apprentice with us last year and his death has come as a shock to us all.

It is with deep, deep sadness that we mourn the death of two students in the same week. Both Adam and John were regarded in the highest possible terms here at IT Sligo and in their own communities.  For those students close to them, they have lost true friends and in your grief we offer you all our sympathy and support.  As an institution we have lost two bright and talented students and our community is shocked and saddened to lose two fine people at such a young age in such tragic circumstances.

Our thoughts go out to Adam’s and John’s family and friends at this very difficult time, and we will continue to offer support to their fellow students and members of staff who may have been affected by this incident.
As a community I would ask we all support those who were close to Adam and John and for us all to remember them both today and in the future.

May they Rest in Peace.

Dr Brendan McCormack, President, IT Sligo.
