The Centre for Sustainability was established by Dr John Bartlett in 2001 to focus interdisciplinary research in sustainability. To date, the Centre’s activities have been in seven main thematic areas:
- Biosolids treatment and reuse
- Treatment of and energy recovery from farm wastes
- Access to environmental information, decision making and justice
- Renewable fuels from marine biomass
- Bog rehabilitation
- Wastewater Treatment Optimisation
- Applied Ecology
In addition, the Centre is a partner in a UCD led research programme on water conservation.
Projects are currently being planned in renewable fuel from wood, development and promotion of hydrogen fuel cells, biodiesel production process development and environmental technology development.
To date, the Centre has received €2.6m in funding, has produced 8 PhDs and 4 Masters Degrees (1 PhD and 2 Masters ongoing), 21 peer reviewed papers, 62 conference presentations, and 10 contract research reports.

The Centre has Strategic Alliances with the North West Environment and Energy Consortium, COMHAR (the National Sustainability Council) and the Centre for Rural Innovation Regeneration and Sustainabilty.
