MA in Interior Architecture
The Masters in Interior Architecture, Level 9, is a two year full-time programme concentrating on advanced interior architectural design. The programme is guided by the principle that in order to inspire innovation it is necessary to mediate between the global and the local, rooting resources in culture, distinctiveness, identity, meaning and sense of place.
Situated on the Atlantic edge of Europe, Ireland has traced one of the longest and strongest lines through the history of civilisation. Nowhere is this more evident than in the northwest; an area rich in ancient lore, apparent in both the physical remains of human settlement, archaeological monuments and in the lineage of storytelling passed from one generation to the next. In an evocative landscape of ever-changing light, where the lines between history and mythology are intertwined, our ancestors, through the course of their development, significantly engaged with the land in their endeavour to create a human environment.
Weathered rock surfaces displaying the scars of formation, twisting and folding – evidence of the tumultuous energy raging above and below the earth’s surface, forces of water, wind and time. This energy has inspired creativity through the ages, and its drawing power is still evident from the influx of artists, musicians, writers and designers which continues today.
The practice of interior architecture is concerned largely (but not exclusively) with exploring new and exciting ways to reuse our existing built environment. In doing so it breaks down the boundaries that lie between Architecture and Interior Design to offer an innovative and multi-disciplinary approach to the design of habitable spaces. Interior Architecture combines a variety of associated fields including, architecture, furniture and product design, graphics, performing arts, fashion, and art. It is both a creative and technical discipline, controlled by the need for flair and innovation in conjunction with adherence to codes and programmatic functioning. Interior architects find themselves working at the cutting edge of design, engaging with social, cultural, economic, ecological, and aesthetic issues and their effects on everyday life. There is no limit to the size or type of the buildings, or range of activities explored, in the projects which interior Architects deal with……… it truly is a profession that has come of age.
The new Masters programme is conceived as a progression route from the existing BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture, Level 8 programme. This programme was established in Sligo in 1998 and has recently been awarded European Council of Interior Architecture (ECIA) Programme Recognition and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Candidacy status making it unique in Ireland and the UK and a leader in this area of study.
The Masters programme in Interior Architecture will provide a high level focal point in Ireland for the discipline of interior architecture in order to conduct research and contribute to the global forum. The programme ethos is centred on the belief that design is a mode of research. Masters students are encouraged to discover their own individual expression by engaging in an active stream of research through design, thus enabling graduates to take leadership roles with an implicit approach to remodelling the existing fabric, contributing to a more inclusive and informed profession into the 21st century.
The Masters Design Studio forms the core of the curriculum where innovative design propositions are generated and explored. Students are encouraged to develop their personal interpretations of their influences and to develop a specialist focus evolving from their choice of elective focus streams-
- Interiors without Boundaries
- Innovative Building Conservation
- Contemporary Furniture Design
- Energy and the Built Environment
This is a unique, innovative and exciting new programme.
The programme is designed for both recent graduates and for those in practice who wish to up-skill.
