Thesis Title: A Longitudinal Analysis of Sustainable Planning For Tourism in Ireland with a Focus on Tourism Indicator Systems.

Abstract:

European member states recorded in excess of 588 million tourism visits in 2014, a 22 million increase compared to 2013 (European Travel Commission, 2014). Irish tourism too has witnessed significant growth. In Ireland tourism accounts for over €3.4 billion in revenue. In 2014 alone, Ireland welcomed over 7.6 million visitors (DTTS, 2015) providing employment for approximately 180,000 people (Fáilte Ireland, 2014). Thus, tourism was identified as one of the economic sectors that helped to play a significant role in Ireland’s economic recovery. While tourism has indeed contributed to economic development and made a substantial difference in some areas (Hatipoglu, Alvarez and Ertuna, 2014) it has failed to live up to expectations in others (Sharpley, 2009). The ill-planned or excessive development of tourism can damage the special qualities that are essential for a successful sustainable industry (Connell, Page and Bentley, 2009). Tourism indicator systems do however; provide a precedent for the control of development of tourism destinations globally. The European Commission’s (EC) European Tourism Indicator System for sustainable management at destination level (2013) if implemented is designed to help Local Authorities in Ireland sustainably plan for tourism. This research will contribute new knowledge by providing a longitudinal analysis on the provision of sustainable planning for tourism in Ireland from the years 2005 to 2015. This study also seeks to improve our understanding of the role tourism indicator systems have in the tourism planning process.
