18911PM0109In recognition of the contribution of IT Sligo’s former and current students on the All Ireland winning Donegal GAA team, the Sam Maguire Cup is set to make an appearance at the Institute’s Annual Conferring Ceremonies next week.

More than 1,800 graduates will be conferred at IT Sligo next Thursday and Friday, November 8th and 9th, with the first cohort of students graduating from programmes in Computing in Games Development, Supervisory Management, and a variety of programmes that were introduced to address the skills developments in the built environment and pharmaceutical sectors.

The Sam Maguire Cup and a number of the winning team’s players and management will be special guests at one of the conferring sessions on Thursday, November 8th, including current IT Sligo student Mark McHugh and his father, Martin McHugh who once coached the IT Sligo team.

President of IT Sligo, Professor Terri Scott, said it’s a fitting tribute to the team and to the IT Sligo management team that worked with the players during their time at the Institute; “The IT Sligo representation at the All Ireland Football Final this year was outstanding. Between the Donegal and Mayo panels, 21 of them were either current students or alumni. The talent base was further recognised at the 2012 annual GAA All Star Awards when 5 of our graduates and Mark McHugh were named All Stars.  Karl Lacey who graduated in 2007 was also named player of the year,” she said.

“Sport is a very important part of student life at IT Sligo and we’re delighted that the Sam Maguire Cup and some of the team are joining us for what is a huge highlight in the academic calendar. The students being conferred have reached a milestone in their careers and they can be very proud of their achievements.  It was a great occasion to see the Sam Maguire return to the North West and it will be a very welcome guest at our conferring celebrations,” she said.
