Believe in Science – Science Fact versus Science Fiction 

The Sligo Science Festival, supported by  Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), is a week-long programme of activities and events which aims to make science more interesting and accessible to children and adults alike.

It highlights how science, technology and engineering are hugely relevant to us all in our everyday lives, lead to interesting and exciting career options and develop creativity in our children.

The Sligo event is organised by the School of Science at IT Sligo with events taking place at various locations and venues across the county over the seven days.

IT Sligo is pleased to announce the appointment of Oli Melia as the 2017 Sligo Science Festival co-ordinator.

Oli comes with a wealth of experience, having delivered delivering science festivals around the world and has spent the past four years heading operations for the Edinburgh international and the Abu Dhabi international science festivals.

“Science festivals offer a great way for the public, young and old, to engage and be inspired by science and technology and I believe Sligo science festival and ITSligo have shown to date, how they can be front runners in this field,” says Oli.

“Science festivals balance entertainment with science messaging, offering chances to see, hear and participate in science, so no matter what your knowledge of science, there is always something at a science festival for you to engage with.”

Dr Jeremy Bird , Head of the School of Science at IT Sligo, praised the staff at IT Sligo for their work in  previous years in delivering the Sligo Science Festival to a level that can attract an internationally recognised science festival producer.

“I am excited by the prospect of what we can deliver during this year’s science week and with Oli on board, we are also excited for the prospects of how we can move forward in future years and build on our successes to date to create one of the best science festivals in Ireland.”

The theme of this year’s Sligo Science Festival (Science Week) is: Believe in Science – Science Fact versus Science Fiction .”

The festival will provide a week of events, lectures, workshops and displays to educate, entertain and enlighten. Events will take place on campus and at various locations around County Sligo.

2017 highlights will include:

Festival Launch  – Friday, November 10th, at The Factory performance Space – circus science, magic, music & more.

Annual Science Fair – Sunday, November 12th, 12-5pm – performances, interactive displays and demonstrations for all the family to enjoy. Magic, mystery, and lots of fun guaranteed for both children and adults.

Zombie Science: Worst Case Scenario in Ballymote, Boyle & ITSligo

The Science of Gaelic Games at  Sligo GAA Centre of Excellence  with Dr Edwenia O’Malley &  Dr Cathy McHugh.
