Ronan Keane – BBs in Applied Sport with Business

Name: Ronan Keane

What key skills did you learn while studying at ATU Sligo that have influenced your career?

In 4th year I added the marketing Module to my Level 8 this was imperative to me getting in the door at my workplace. As well as this, sport, knowledge of NGB’s and their structure as well as the computer modules all stood to me in my career path.

Can you share some detail of your career path to date?

My career path was a s basic as it came. Once I finished college, I looked for internships, anything would do just to get some experience. There was an ad for a marketing role within a tech company right here in Castlebar named Sportlomo. They specialized in Sports software and at the time targeted county boards, leagues and associations in Ireland. The job was a 6-month internship which ended up being a 9-month internship, which ended dup being a 12-month internship. When the 12 months ended the company received an investment injection and I was hired to a full time permanent position as a marketing guy. My role was now sales and lead generation as we expanded internationally into Canada, Australia, New Zealand the UK and the US.

What does your current role involve?

Currently I am an Executive Account Manager in our US market. I look after clients from start to finish, along with aftercare and support for whatever length their contract is. Currently my largest client would be USA Rugby who have been using our system for almost 2 years.

What advice would you give a first year student starting in ATU Sligo?

Get to your classes, even if your just there in body not spirit just get in and get your notes!

What specifically about the course did you particularly enjoy?

Well at first obviously I loved the sport side of things, the weekly outings, fishing trips, Personal Training, everything any outgoing person would enjoy!
But as time went on, I was lucky enough to meet some inspiring lecturers that really opened my mind to the world of business. I excelled at subjects like Strategy, Accountancy, and Economics, stuff I really hated in school I fell in love with in 3rd level education.

What is the best thing about the course that you think new applicants should know?

You will be the most popular class at the college, so remember to love everyone! There will be shy people in your class so do everything you can to instill confidence and help people come out of their shell!
Sports with Business were at all the parties and were well known for long nights, cramming sessions and mad rushes to get projects in!!

Any favorite modules during your time studying?

Strategy was my favourite module. Paul McWeeney isn’t everyone’s cup of tea (He wont mind me saying that) but this is one class I ask you
to really take seriously if you have any interest in business!! You will learn how it all works as well as reading up on daily business/technology news….

What advice would you share with our current students considering a career in your field?

Try and get skills and knowledge you will need to get access to the tech sector, the big buzzword these days is “Agile” development process.
In my opinion, outgoing, team leaders are needed in the tech sector at a faster rate than ever before and people on this course have natural skill sets to attain these jobs.

So really getting to grips with process such as Agile and tools such as JIRA would give anyone a good stepping stone to get into tech. Of course there are lots of other skills such as marketing (Digital) , Photoshop, sales, project management, coding, etc that all put you on a crash course with the tech sector so do some research and see is there anything you could be doing in your own time to make you more attractive to tech employers once you graduate.

A great place to get in the door is with a “Start-up”, they will hire you for little pay, you will be thrown into the deep end, will get a taste of everything and most importantly you will get experience on your C.V
