Ultan Mc Kenna – BBs in Applied Sport with Business

Name: Ultan Mc Kenna

School: Summerhill College. Sligo.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choose your course

My name is Ultan McKenna, I am 20 years old from Riverstown Co. Sligo. I’m currently studying Applied Sport with Business here at ATU Sligo.  I am the 2nd youngest in my family, I have 3 brothers and 1 sister.  I have a huge interest in sport. I love football mainly, I also follow GAA, rugby, and basketball and I love going to the gym. Looking at the Applied Sport with Business course I could see you learn about a range of sports and do some business studies as well.

Why did you choose ATU Sligo?

They are a few reasons why I chose ATU Sligo. I am from Sligo so I don’t have to travel far from home, I know loads who have done this course and they recommended it and the sports facilities.

What advice would you give someone thinking about choosing ATU Sligo?

I would say don’t be afraid to speak to the lecturers they are so supportive and work around your sporting schedule. The college offers so much support to help with classwork and assignment which has helped me so much so far in my time at ATU Sligo.

Do you like Sligo as a student town? e.g. things to do, food, nightlife, clubs and societies, accommodation etc.

Yes, I enjoy Sligo as a student town. As I got older, I enjoy the town a lot more especially the nightlife, the huge choices of bars and clubs to socialise. I also enjoy the restaurants in the town as well as cafes and coffee shops. Plenty of places to go to see with Rosses Point, Strandhill and Hazelwood that have great scenery.

What specifically about your course do you particularly enjoy?

So far in this semester, I am enjoying the Sports and Adventure Tourism module. It is very interesting looking at how sport and tourism link. We have an assignment on a tour of our area which I think is interesting because not many know the history of my area and things to do. I also enjoy Anatomy and Physiology, it’s cool learning how the body works and the different parts inside our bodies. They are the 2 modules I enjoy on the course.

What would you say to a student thinking about studying your course?

I would say if you love sports this is the course for you. The lecturers are very helpful and very easy to talk to. Make sure to stay on top of your work and fill in your logbook each week. There is a lot of practical work so you’re not always in a classroom.

Tell us about your sporting career/success so far?

What is the best thing about sports and sports facilities at ATU Sligo?

The soccer team made it to 2 finals last year, they are an excellent side that I am now delighted to be a part of. The gym on campus is great for students to use to get a good workout in. The 2 soccer pitches are top quality great having a great grass pitch as well as Astro which suits the style of play the college play. Lastly, the coaches the team have are top quality.

How has the sports scholarship benefited you? What are its advantages of it?

The scholarship has helped me pay my fees which I am grateful for it has helped me out so much and to say I’m a scholar at ATU Sligo is an honour. The advantage is a free gym membership, which is great, save so much by this.
