Students from IT Sligo held a Sleep Out on the main campus on Tuesday night to raise awareness and money for Sophia Housing.

Organised by the Institute’s Students Union, sixteen hardy souls wrapped up in their winter woollies and sleeping bags and spent the night sleeping outside the main door of the Institute.

Students Union President Stephen Doak, who was one of the participants, said the group got a couple of hours sleep. “It was a real experience and a challenge,” he told local radio station Ocean FM on Tuesday morning. “We were wrapped up well and got one or two hours of rest. But, when I woke during the night, the reality of what it’s like to have to sleep outdoors really hit home.”

Almost €1500 was raised by the students for Sophia – a support network in Ireland which works with people who, for any number of reasons find themselves homeless. It provides individuals and families with support and housing to meet their own individual needs. The service is holistic in nature as it supports people to reach their own potential at their own pace.

Donations can be made by visiting the IT Sligo Students Union facebook page.
