Clodagh O’Brien – BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science

Name: Clodagh O’Brien

From: Wicklow

School: Avondale Community College, Rathdrum

I always had an interest in science at school, but particularly biology. When I looked into the modules on the Biomedical Science degree at ATU Sligo, I knew this was for me. The course covers a vast amount of subjects from maths, physics and biology to information technology.

I really enjoy the practical experience that you get with this course. There are about twelve hours of laboratory work each week. This really helps to understand the content of the modules. The theory from class is carried over into the lab and you put everything you have read about into practical practice.

It doesn’t matter if you have not studied science for the Leaving Certificate either. In first year, everyone gets to learn the basics of the core science subjects. The lecturers are brilliant too and always willing to help. The class sizes are also small enough that you never feel uncomfortable asking questions.

Because of where I live, I knew I would have to travel for college. I narrowed down my options when filling out my CAO form and I chose to study in Sligo as I knew I would have a great college experience all round. I am really enjoying my time living in Sligo. It is such a great place to study. You are close to the town where there is so much happening. There are also a lot of places that you can travel to along the west coast of Ireland. The likes of Knocknarea and Benbulben plus the beaches at Rosses Point and Strandhill, are all just a few minutes from campus. When it comes to choosing college, it’s not just about the academic side. You also have to think, do I want to live in this place for three or four years? It’s a big commitment so consider everything!

My long term goal is to finish my third level education here in Sligo. I love that I will have the opportunity to gain some experience in industry before I graduate. I would like to progress to a career in the Biopharmaceutical industry, so getting this experience is great. However, before I settle into a career, I plan to travel around the world to experience different cultures.
