Niall Morahan – BBs (Hons) in Business

Name: Niall Morahan

From: Leitrim

School: Carrick on Shannon Community School

Why did you choose ATU Sligo?

I chose to study at ATU Sligo as it gave me the opportunity to play full time professional football while also pursuing an academic career. I had played under Colm Jinks (ATU Sligo soccer team manager) at underage level so he played a big part in me joining ATU Sligo. I was quite unsure what I wanted to study and the college offered a broad range of courses which made my choice simple.

What advice would you give someone thinking about choosing ATU Sligo?

My main advice would be to study something you have an interest in and keep on top of your work. Apart from that it’s important to make some new friends and enjoy yourself. ATU Sligo is a great place to study. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far!

What specifically about your course do you particularly enjoy?

My degree has just  the right amount of numbers so it’s easier to get to know everyone and make friends. The lecturers are all very helpful too, which makes asking questions simple. There is a wide variety of modules which really interests me, such as accounting, management, law and marketing etc. In my final year of college I will be able to branch off into a specific area of study which I look forward to. There was an option to study a language too. I had studied German in secondary school so it was a big plus to be able to continue that.

Tell us about your sporting career/success so far?

I played locally in Leitrim and Sligo up until I joined Sligo Rovers at 15 years of age in 2015. I played for Sligo’s U17’s, captained the U19 side and signed my first professional contract in 2018. I made my international debut in 2019 for the Irish U19’s and I was a member of the Irish U19 squad for the European Qualifiers and European Finals in Armenia 2019. I now play for the senior Sligo Rovers team.

What is the best thing about sport and sports facilities at ATU Sligo?

It’s hard to choose one best thing! The sports facilities at ATU Sligo are top class. There are two football pitches, a grass pitch and an AstroTurf where we train and play our matches. The gym and indoor hall in the sports complex are great and cater for all my needs.  I’ve had a few tough sessions down on the running track, which is great to have too. All the sports facilities mentioned are right on campus which makes it all the easier to access.
