Course Summary
This programme offers students an introduction into a wide range of engineering disciplines. Our suite of Civil, Mechanical, Electronics & Self Driving Technologies and Robotics & Automation all have common first year modules, giving students a taste of each engineering discipline before having to commit to which area of engineering they wish to specialise in from Year Two.
PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
This general engineering year gives students exposure to all the different types of engineering that are on offer and equips them with the fundamentals of engineering. It will help to make an informed choice of what field of engineering to enter based on aptitude and interest. On successful completion of the first year, students will transfer into second year of the course of their choice, subject to space availability.
YEAR ONE
The first year focuses on the fundamentals of engineering such as Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Introduction to Engineering and CAD and modelling among others.
YEARS TWO TO FOUR
In the subsequent year, students choose which speciality from Civil Engineering, Robotics and Automation, Electronic and Self Driving Technologies or Mechanical Engineering to explore. In these years students engage in more detailed application fo the fundamentals in engineering in their chosen field.
Students undertake a 12-week work placement in semester two of their third year.

Entry Requirements
Entry requirements for CAO courses at ATU Sligo are available for download below:
- Download Entry requirements for just Level 8 programmes
- Download Entry requirements for all programmes
A H5 in Leaving Cert Mathematics is an entry requirement for this programme. Those who do not have a H5 grade in Mathematics may take the ATU Sligo Alternative Maths Exam, which is equivalent to Higher Level Mathematics.
The Alternative Maths Exam will take place in late August 2022. A date will be confirmed closer to the time. Please see below for more information and available resources.
ALTERNATIVE MATHS EXAM AND ONLINE RESOURCES
ATU Sligo offers a free online pre-degree Mathematics Open Course MOOC leading to a special Mathematics exam, equivalent to Leaving Certificate Higher Level. The MOOC provides on-line resources including revision notes and sample papers to support students taking the examination.
The MOOC, launched in June 2017, is particularly suitable for CAO Leaving Certificate applicants who may not meet the Mathematics entry requirements for this Honours degree programme (minimum of H5 in LC) following the Leaving Certificate examinations or who are not taking higher level Leaving Certificate Mathematics. A pass in this special exam will be deemed equivalent to meeting the Mathematics entry requirement for this programme.
The Mathematics examination takes place at ATU Sligo and may also be available as an on-line proctored examination.
Current and prospective applicants can access the Mathematics MOOC as follows:
1. Register your name and email address on the Open Course (MOOC) website here: https://opencourses.itsligo.ie/login/signup.php
2. Once registered on the site enrol on the course here: https://opencourses.itsligo.ie/course/view.php?id=27 (the enrolment key is civil2017).

In year two, students choose which speciality from Civil Engineering, Robotics and Automation, Electronics and Self Driving Technologies or Mechanical Engineering they wish to specialise in. Throughout subsequent years, students engage in more detailed application fo the fundamentals in Engineering in their chosen field.
We will seek accreditation from Engineers Ireland for Chartered Engineer after the first cohort of graduates.
Alumni
"The flexibility of the engineering degrees at ATU Sligo is brilliant. I originally planned on studying Mechanical Engineering. However, after studying the different aspects of engineering I changed my specialism to Civil Engineering.”
John Mc Fadden, BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering
“I always had an interest in engineering, but I wasn’t sure which area was right for me. I loved getting to study all areas of engineering in ATU Sligo before deciding. In the end, I chose Mechanical Engineering. I haven’t looked back since!”
Rebecca Staunton, BEng in Mechanical Engineering
