We provide accessible learning experiences across seven creative disciplines that engage with and build on the rich cultural legacy and genius loci of our region. We illuminate the value of creativity and cultural contribution to society, and seeks to make a lasting contribution, locally and globally.
All our programmes are delivered using a vibrant mix of studio work, critical and creative thinking, and research, with combined facilities and opportunities for cross-pollination and interdisciplinary practice. Each programme offers a full package of assisted learning through lectures, tutorials, seminars and support for individual and group projects, and our learning is focused to give each student the support she or he needs to build expertise in their discipline.
Students at YAADA benefit from a rich educational experience that equips them for success in their chosen professional careers. Whatever their chosen discipline, our priority is to encourage each of our students to develop their personal brand of imagination and creativity, to help them acquire the knowledge, skills and experience needed to realise personal ambitions and to find their unique voice as an artist, designer or architect.
In addition, we provide the opportunities for students to explore contemporary themes that connect all the visual arts and design disciplines, and enable them to acquire the business skills that success in any career demands. YAADA students not only achieve technical mastery of their practice, supported by highly skilled specialist technicians, but also develop their critical and intellectual abilities. At YAADA you can expect a high level of support from academic staff, as well as access to facilities and services and an excellent library resource.
Our aim is to provide the conditions in which students flourish and achieve their highest potential. Come to the Yeats Academy to push the parameters of your practice and to pursue your dreams.
We aim to:
- Be Inquiring
- Be Innovative
- Be Engaged
- Be Collaborative
- Be Transformative
- Be Fearless
What type of student are you?
A out-of-the-box thinker who uses their creative skills to engage with their surroundings, whether it be words, art, design or acting. You will be able to see the creativity in everything and you will understand having the fluidity and ability to draw inspiration from the everyday is a vital skill.
Meet the Head of Department
An accomplished educator and academic leader, Emmet O’Doherty is the pioneering Head of the Yeats Academy of Arts, Design and Architecture (or YAADA as it is affectionately known), IT Sligo’s newest department established in 2018. Emmet is an advocate for the creative and cultural arts and the relevance of YAADA’s unique type of studio based education. With deep roots in the North-West and a native of Bundoran in Co. Donegal, Emmet values our role as a place-based institution committed to expanding inclusion, equity and access to enhance a genuinely rich and inspiring learning environment full of diverse experiences, viewpoints and talents. Emmet is spearheading the €16.8 million development of the new Creative Northern Campus currently underway at IT Sligo.
Emmet’s teaching experience includes 15 years of undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education both on campus and on-line before taking up the role of Head of Department. Emmet is currently completing his Doctorate in Educational Leadership. He is passionate about how both individuals and groups can live, lead and operate at the highest level. Emmet’s current research broadly centres upon the links between high-performance, cultural and creative education, and positively oriented learning environments. It seeks to explore strategies that would allow the Yeats Academy at IT Sligo to optimise its talents and succeed in reaching its full potential in an environment of high expectation.
Emmet recognises that empowering students with strong business and entrepreneurial acumen along with a deep disciplinary understanding will allow them to develop as creative professionals empowered to renew society through their creative work and contribute to economic growth, employment and wellbeing in the communities within which they live.
