CE Analysis of Oestrogenics

Project Title: Characterisation of the physical, chemical and biological profile of a range of municipal and industrial sludges (2) – Capillary Electrophoresis methodologies for Oestrogen mimics.

Student: Ann Moran

Supervisor: Dr. Fiona Regan

Funding Body: Higher Education Authority

Abstract:

A research study is proposed, to examine the physical, chemical and biological profile of a range of municipal and industrial sludges.

A number of studies in the literature have identified a significant gap in fundamental data on sludges. The principal objective of this project is to establish a basis for selecting parameters for study, to select a priority list, and to analyse those parameters.

This project involves direct collaboration between IT, Sligo and Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT). Dr. Fiona Regan of the School of Applied Science at LIT has carried out a number of studies on the development of Capillary Electrophoresis. CE has particular applications for the analysis of oestrogenic compounds and other complex organics, which are of special interest in analysis of sludges.

Based on the results of this initial characterisation, a sub-set of parameters will be identified for further investigation, in conjunction with other projects in the Programme.

Two post-graduate students are envisaged. The Sligo-based student will work primarily on metals and biological parameters. The Limerick- based student will work primarily on oestrogenic materials and complex organics.
