How will I know if I am eligible?

ATU Sligo has designed their online courses in a very flexible way in order to give you the option of graduating at different levels. These levels include a Level 6 Certificate or Higher Certificate, a Level 7 Bachelor Degree, a Level 8 Honours Bachelor Degree and a Level 9 Professional and Postgraduate qualification.

This ladder system enables you to progress through to qualifications appropriate to your personal requirements, previous qualifications, and work experience. At ATU Sligo, every course is made up of a set of modules or subjects and each of these has a credit weighting. Credits is a universal term in higher education used to quantify learnings.

If you’re thinking about applying for an online course at ATU Sligo, please make sure to check the level of the course, the credits, and if you meet the eligibility criteria listed on the course web page.

Watch Dara McGoldrick from ATU, talk through the levels, credits and entry requirements for studying part-time online.

Applicants with other qualifications and with relevant work experience may also be considered through ATU Sligo’s Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) process.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that may allow you to gain admission to a programme or to receive exemptions/credit from some parts of a programme based on demonstrated learning that you may have achieved through another programme of study or through your work and career. A fundamental principle of RPL is that a learner should not be asked to relearn something they already know. With RPL, prior learning can count towards entry, advanced entry, credit or exemptions from modules.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can be used for:

  • Gaining access or advanced entry into a programme
  • Gaining exemptions from parts of a programme
  • Gaining transfer from one programme to another
  • Gaining entry to post-graduate programmes where the applicant may not have the standard honours primary degree
