Biography

Graduated from Dublin City University (DCU) with a BSc(Hons) in Analytical Science 1988 and a PhD in Electrochemistry 1992 under the supervision of (now) Prof Dermot Diamond.  Employed in the Food Research Centre (Teagasc) as a researcher investigating residues of controlled and banned substances in food and food products by GC-MS and LC-MS. Took up a position in the Forensic Science Laboratory, Phoenix Park, Dublin as a Forensic Scientist with responsibility for analysis and reporting of  illegal drug casework.  Moved to Sligo in 1998 taking up a position in the invitro diagnostics industry as a QA Team Leader.  Eventually moved to the Quality Systems area in the role of Quality System Manager .
In 2007 took up an academic post in the School of Science as a Lecturer in Forensic Science on the Forensic Investigation and Analysis programmes (Level 7 and Level 8) and has been an active member of the teaching staff and programme board since. Moved to the 
post of Assistant Registrar in Jan 2020 with responsibility for QA overview of the academic activities of the institute and oversight of the Examination Office.

Research Interests

  • Analytical Chemistry related to inorganic analysis of marine bathwater and seaweed by spectroscopy.
  • Forensic science related to the frequency of occurrence and persistence of different forensic materials on typical casework items e.g. blood on clothes and shoes and persistence studies of glitter of a variety of surfaces.
