Dr Gerard Mc Granaghan

Jt Assistant Lecturer

researcher

Biography

Gerard lectures in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. He began his career in Mechanical Engineering as a Fitter/Turner with the ESB, and as well as Trade Certificates, he holds Technician Certificates from City and Guilds and a BSc from the Open University. He obtained a BA BAI in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College Dublin in 2007, and was awarded a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Enhanced Boiling) from Trinity College Dublin in 2013.
Gerard has worked with the ESB, as a United Nations Volunteer in Nepal, with ABB Dundalk, as technical staff in Trinity College Dublin, and Senior Development Manager with Ceramicx Ireland.

Gerard currently lectures in Thermodynamics, Materials, Automation, Mathematics, Engineering Science and Workshop Technology. He is currently researching in Heat Transfer (convective flow, two-phase flow, boiling and condensation) and Additive Manufacturing and has been awarded two Presidents Bursaries on "Additive Manufacture of Heat Transfer Surfaces" (ADMEHTS) and in "Use of Surface Coatings in Phase Change Enhancement"(USCiPE).  He has also received a CUA Bursary on "Structures for Optimised Cooling in Additive Manufactured Injection Moulds" collaborating with colleagues in GMIT and AbbVie Sligo.
Gerard is also a committee member of Engineers Without Borders (Ireland) and has set up an EWB Branch in IT Sligo.
