Biography

I am a Chemical Engineer (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) with a Masters in Advanced Materials Technology and Processing (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) and a PhD in Polymer Chemistry (University of Reading, UK).
My research experience spans from magnetic materials to polymer chemistry, composite materials, supramolecular chemistry, bio-inspired polymers, antifouling coatings, adhesives and medical devices. I have attracted more than 1.0 M EUR to date in research funding as PI/co-PI from domestic (Enterprise Ireland) and international (H2020, www.fibreship.eu) sources.

My teaching and student supervision activities span across a wide range of chemistry-related topics in Science studies (including Colloidal Science, Pharmaceutical Formulation, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, structure/property relationships). I have particular interest in online and research-led teaching.

Research Interests

  • Polymer synthesis: novel polymers for adhesives, coatings, polymer composite matrices, medical applications; chemistries with good scale-up potential
  • Materials synthesis, processing and characterization: synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds; polymeric and ceramic materials; functionalisation of metals-ceramics-polymers-composites; comprehensive characterisation (chemical: NMR, FTIR; molecular: GPC/SEC, MS, MALDI-TOF; thermal: DSC, TGA: dynamic & thermomechanical: rheology, DMA; surface: contact angle, XPS, AFM; microscopy: SEM/EDX, TEM; structural: XRD)
  • Biobased & biomimetic/bio-inspired polymers: novel molecular design concepts taking inspiration from nature; mussel adhesive protein mimics; bio-based adhesives; bio-inspired antifouling coatings
  • Biocomposites with advanced functionality: bio-composite design and manufacture to optimize mechanical & structural performance and at the same time gain multiple functionality: mechanical, thermal, damping properties; chemical modification of natural fibres to optimise matrix/fibre interface
  • Supramolecular chemistry: use of non-covalent interactions in the design of novel functional polymers and composites (particulate and fibre-based); self-healing composites
  • Multifunctional materials: recyclable thermosetting polymers & composites: self-healing & malleable thermosetting polymers & composites; dynamic covalent chemistry; non-covalent interactions
  • Polymers and polymer composites for medical applications: bioabsorbable polymers; anti-fouling surfaces; medical adhesives
  • Polymer modification for composite material applications: chemical/physical modification of polymer matrices to facilitate composite manufacturing & processing; polymer blends; recyclable thermosetting composites; novel malleable polymer networks based on dynamic covalent chemistry, and non-covalent interactions
  • Magnetic materials: novel magnetic ceramics; synthesis, processing & characterisation
  • Composite materials: structure/property relationships; fibre/matrix interface engineering and optimisation; correlation between macroscopic and molecular structure across length scales; advanced surface characterisation methods
