Biography

I joined the staff of IT Sligo in September 2015 as a lecturer in Social Care Practice. I am currently running a clinical randomised controlled trial examining the rehabilitation of motor function in stroke patients using Mirror Therapy for my PhD qualification. This trial is is being implemented in conjunction with Sligo University Hospital. I have over 10 years experience working for multiple health care providers in Ireland involving a wide spread of service user including stroke, head injury, Autism and residential care for young people. I hold a position with Acquired Brain Injury Ireland who specialise in rehabilitation for patients with stroke and acquired brain injury.

Research Interests

Research interests concern the area of stroke rehabilitation and Mirror Therapy. Mirror therapy is a relatively new intervention being proposed as a possible cost effective and simplistic adjunct to established stroke rehabilitation techniques. Mirror Therapy is thought to stimulate mirror neurons in the brain leading to a re-balancing of activation between hemispheres resulting in neural plasticity and the return of motor function. Currently my research interest specifically concerns the combination of Mirror Therapy and treadmill training for rehabilitation of motor function in chronic stroke patients.
