Biography

Dr. Sharon Barrett is a Lecturer in the School of Life Science at the Institute of Technology Sligo since 2007 and the Level 9 course co-ordinator for the on-line Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and the MSc in Biopharmaceutical Science which is jointly delivered by IT Sligo and the National Institute of Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT). Dr. Barrett teaches on the Forensic Investigation and Analysis programme and on the Biomedical Science and Medical Biotechnology Programme. Dr Barrett is a Research Supervisor for a joint IT Sligo/NIBRT PhD research project enhancing the education/training needs of the Biologics Processing (Bioprocessing) industry. Prior to joining IT Sligo Dr. Barrett was a Senior Research Scientist in the Centre for Liver Disease, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital where she was involved in Biological Research and in the provision of a National Genetic Testing Service. Her research interests focused on human Liver Disease including Haemochromatosis and other disorders of iron metabolism. DNA profiling studies including single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and gene expression studies using Realtime PCR, Sequencing and GeneChip technologies. Dr. Barrett was also employed as an Associate Lecturer with IT Tallaght from 2002-2007 and was involved in delivering Bioprocessing training courses to Centocor Biologics in Cork. Dr. Barrett completed a B.Sc Honours degree in Biochemistry in National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, at NUIG in 2006.
