Ana Pereira – BSc in Advanced Wood and Sustainable Building Technology
Name: Ana Pereira
I was working in the finance sector for a number of years and decided to change my career direction. I am fascinated by woodwork and wood crafts in general and so I decided to take a leap of faith and throw myself into something I truly love. Roll on a few years later and I am finished my three years studying Advanced Wood and Sustainable Building Technology.
I loved the practical classes and the time spent in the workshop working with timber. Building and making stuff is very satisfying to me so getting to spend a lot of time on practical’s is brilliant. A huge amount of course time is based on practical learning. Graphical Communication and Design & Sustainable Construction are modules I also really enjoyed.
Throughout the degree we were exposed to a huge variety of topics within the building industry. This has helped us to explore different career opportunities that include anything between working in woodwork, building sites, surveying, architectural drawing and site management and supervision.
Alongside working with wood, you learn about building sustainability, through the use of innovative materials and efficient construction methods that ensure good quality buildings. On a global scale, this industry is changing rapidly, and this degree is so important for current market needs. There are lots of job opportunities for us as graduates which is obviously great also.
For any students thinking about studying this degree – you will love it! The time spent in the workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn and develop skills and explore creativity, so take advantage of it. You will always have your own workspace and access to the best facilities possible. The lecturers are brilliant too and always so helpful. Class sizes are small so they are always on hand to offer advice and help. Their talent and ability is so impressive also!
In the past I have volunteered in several building projects, one of them in Zambia promoted by Habitat for Humanity Ireland.
My overall goal for the future is to develop a career in the natural sustainable building industry. My vision, besides building my own tiny house, is to design and build small, self-sustained living spaces for people who have an interest in minimalist ways of living.
