Higher Certificate in Health and Exercise Science

Are you interested in a career in health, physical activity, exercise and science? This higher certificate offers a broad-based exercise science education in human anatomy & physiology, health psychology, physical activity, exercise prescription, biomechanics and health promotion. Emphasis is placed on developing core health and exercise related skills and competencies.

Key Skills 

This is a new programme and the indicative CAO points are 350.This two-year course is comprised of a number of inter-related subject streams providing you with key skills as follows: 

  • Physical activity prescription and instruction  
  • Exercise testing and evaluation 
  • Health and exercise promotion  
  • Health-initiative design, implementation and evaluation (various population groups in a variety of settings)  
  • Advanced computer and health communication skills  
  • Research skills to design, conduct and analyse scientific experiments in health and exercise related fields.

Career Opportunities  

This course provides graduates with a pathway to progress to degree level courses in allied health professions such as: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, sports science, sports rehabilitation, diagnostic radiography, clinical measurement and other health-related disciplines. Graduates may be employed in the health and exercise industry. 

What are my further study opportunities?

Further Studies 

Graduates can gain direct entry onto the Bachelor of Science (Level 7) Health Science and Physiology or Bachelor of Science (Level 8) in Health Science and Physical Activity.   

Level 7 graduates can decide to complete their studies in the Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Health Promotion (Level 8, One year add on).
