French engineering students are honing their skills in Ireland, thanks to an IT Sligo international learning initiative.

Forty-four students from ESME Sudria, a leading third-level engineering school based in Paris, Lille and Lyons, are the latest additions to IT Sligo’s growing international student body. The Institute has some 400 international students, from 44 nations.

It is the first time IT Sligo has been chosen by L’Ecole Spéciale de Mécanique et dElectricité (ESME Sudria) as a “Study Abroad Semester” location for its engineering students.

ESME was founded in Founded in 1905 and holds the prestigious French higher education designation, “Grande Ecole”.

The school offers a 5-year curriculum in engineering with programs in energy and systems, networks and telecommunications, embedded systems and electronics, and information processing systems engineering.

IT Sligo’s success in attracting ESME Sudria is seen as a double accolade, for the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering in the School of Engineering and Design and  IT Sligo’s International Office. The semester collaboration was agreed following much preparatory work and ongoing liaison with the French college by the International Office and lecturers in the Department.

At Sligo, the 44 students are studying Bachelor in Engineering degree modules in Software Engineering, Microcontroller Programming, Embedded Programming, Project, Data Communications and Business English.

Two ESME lecturers, Abdussalam Gemal, lecturer in electronics & microprocessors, and Sébastien Herry, Head of the Information Processing Systems Laboratory, recently visited the campus to meet staff and get feedback from the French students.

Úna Parsons, Head of the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, said: “ESME Sudria’s choice of IT Sligo is a reflection of its confidence in the calibre of our  teaching and facilities, and the student support and campus social climate.

“One of the key objectives of the Institute’s current Strategic Plan is a strengthening of international linkages, and this is certainly being achieved through these new links with ESME Sudria.”

Patrick Lynch, Commercial and International Sales Manager at IT Sligo, said: “ESME SUDRIA sends almost 250 Electronic Engineering students for a semester of study abroad each year to university partners in China, Denmark, Scotland & Latvia. We are delighted they have also chosen to partner with IT Sligo as we seek to further enhance both our EU and non-EU international collaboration efforts”.
