The progress of one of IT Sligo’s most promising young golfers has been recognised by the sport’s leading administrative body globally.

Declan Reidy, who is a final year Business with Marketing student at the Institute, has been awarded a prestigious golf scholarship by the Royal & Ancient (R&A).

The R&A Foundation makes awards to universities and colleges to assist them with the education and development of talented young golfers during their course of study and to enhance the general standard of university golf. Awards are also made to individual student golfers.

Declan’s award is believed to be the first of its kind to be made to a golfer from an Institute of Technology.

“While the scholarship recognises a player’s achievements and development to date, there was a challenging set of criteria laid down by the R&A,” said Declan. “So, it’s a nice feather in the cap to get this recognition.”

In addition to his new scholarship award, Declan is also a current IT Sligo Sports Scholarship recipient. This scheme provides financial and mentoring support to athletes of outstanding talent, many of whom may have already represented the Institute, their county or Ireland in their respective sports.

Reidy plays his golf out of County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point and recently finished 7th at the Irish Intervarsities event in Rosslare.

He will be a key member of the IT Sligo team, which will compete in the Intervarsities team championships next March.
