An IT Sligo student and Sports Scholarship recipient scooped the prestigious Intervarsities Player of the Tournament award at the recent Women’s Soccer Colleges Association of Ireland Awards Banquet in Cork.

Deirdre Doherty, a student of the BSc in Health Science and Physiology, took home the annual award ahead of stiff competition from senior and underage international players. She has represented Ireland at underage and colleges’ level and is also a prominent member of the IT Sligo team which did enormously well in the Intervarsities Cup Final, before being narrowly beaten by the University of Limerick.

Students Roisin McCafferty (BSc in Health Science and Physiology), Lucy Hannon (Bachelor of Business in Recreation and Leisure), Maria Harrington (Certificate in Business), and Orla Devaney (Certificate in Science), also received Premier League All Star awards in recognition of the IT Sligo team’s achievement in finishing joint top of the Premier League with UL.

All four students were key players in the Premier League, which saw IT Sligo win an impressive nine out of 10 games. Each of the players have also played international soccer at underage level and have been involved with Training sessions with the Irish Colleges Squad this season, and all four also hold IT Sligo Sports Scholarships in Soccer.

UL and IT Sligo will meet in Galway this Friday 25th March in a Premier League Play-off decider to decide on this season’s champions.
