Electrical Engineering is a growing sector providing a vast range of job opportunities, and to meet demand from industry and students, IT Sligo has launched a new Higher Certificate in Electrical Installation and Maintenance programme.
This two-year Level 6 course will equip graduates for jobs in such diverse areas as factory maintenance, renewable energy installation, field service technicians and burglar/fire alarm installations.
The course will provide students with hands on experience of working with electricity, providing an in-depth working knowledge of electrical installations. Participants will learn how to how to install, test, commission and troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment, with the emphasis on developing practical skills and problem-solving techniques.
The Head of Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Dr David Tormey said the introduction of the course was a significant development which would create important opportunities in this sector. “Our new Higher Certificate in Electrical Installation and Maintenance will equip graduates with the necessary skills and expertise in electrical engineering to serve as electrical technicians and service engineers in industry,” he said. “The new programme also offers graduates progression opportunities to Level 7 degree programmes within the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering”, added Dr Tormey.
First year students will be introduced to the exciting world of electricity and electronics. Basic electricity and electronics will be covered through a combination of lectures, workshops and practical laboratory experiments. Subjects will include electrical installation techniques, mathematics and basic industrial wiring techniques including wiring systems, distribution boards, motor control and panel wiring techniques. Computing and networking are key technologies now deeply embedded in commercial and industrial electrical control systems and a programming and computing module will develop the students’ core skills within these areas.
In the second year students will progress to more advanced electrical and electronic circuitry and calculations while digital technology will also be introduced. Those with an interest in industrial control technologies will be catered for with Automation Control and Mechatronics technology modules included on the programme. Other areas which will be covered include Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Pneumatics & Hydraulics and Management & Entrepreneurship.
The minimum requirement for entry is a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of D3 ordinary in five subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish. No previous electrical experience is required for admission, however, advanced entry into the third semester in the second year, can be accessed by applicants who have successfully completed Phase 6 of the Electrical/Instrumentation apprenticeship or equivalent.
