Nuclear Power on the agenda at IRRS Conference

JamesMurphyThe 2011 Irish Radiation Research Society Conference will be held at IT Sligo on Friday, September 30th.

This is the first time the Conference has been hosted at IT Sligo, and the Conference will be chaired by Dr James Murphy PhD, SFI Stokes Lecturer & Head of the Mitochondrial Biology & Radiation Research Group at IT Sligo.

At the one day conference, NUI, Galway Emeritus Professor Philip Walton will discuss why Ireland must have a serious and unemotional debate about Nuclear Power. His lecture will discuss the pros and cons of this option and he will also make reference to the Fukushima accident.

Professor of Molecular Dermatology from Newcastle University, Mark Birch-Machin, is a pioneer in the identification of sunlight-induced mitochondrial DNA damage accumulation in human skin. His lecture will examine the association of DNA damage with cancer. 

World leader in the field of Radiation Biology, Professor Carmel Mothersill of McMaster University in Canada, will deliver a lecture on the non-targeted effects of radiation.

Lorraine Currivan of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland will also present their new Research Strategy for 2011-2013.
