IT Sligo has appointed a Sports Development Officer to develop and promote sport with the Institute and in the wider community.

The new Sports Development Officer Ross Lappin will work to increase participation in sport and physical activity across all levels and age groups, and across all sectors.

His role will involve strengthening existing links and the establishment of new relationships with agencies such as Local Sports Partnerships, National Governing Bodies of Sport and other agencies working with minority groups and people from disadvantaged backgrounds to support their involvement in sport.

The Sports Development Officer will also work closely with staff and students to determine particular interests and strengths. Along with having its own playing pitches, IT Sligo has a range of facilities in the state of the art Knocknarea Arena, flood lit Astro-turf pitches and an international standard running track.

Ross will develop a comprehensive sporting programme for students and staff at IT Sligo which will include encouraging participation in appropriate higher education and inter-institutional competitions and leagues.

According to President of IT Sligo, Professor Terri Scott; “The appointment of our new Sports Development Officer represents the culmination of many months of hard work and dedication by IT Sligo and local partner agencies. IT Sligo has a proud record in sporting achievements and this appointment will support the reach of the Institute in developing sport throughout the wider community. ”

Ross Lappin was recently appointed to the post and brings with him several years of experience having worked in the private and public sector.

“I am delighted with my appointment as the new Sports Development Officer at IT Sligo. It is a very exciting time to be involved in sport in Sligo and I look forward to working with the Institute and the local community, who I hope will help shape the future direction of sport in the Institute,” he said.

Head of Development and Business Operations, Gordon Ryan expressed his thanks to the Institute in its support of the post. He also thanked and requested the continued assistance of those working within the Institute and in local sporting organisations and agencies that have been so influential in the delivery of sporting opportunities to date.

He added: “We have ambitious plans for the sports facilities at IT Sligo for the college and the wider community. We invested €2 million euro in new sports facilities this year alone and we now have some of the finest sports facilities in the North West, with the Knocknarea Arena, an international standard running track, flood lit pitches, and our Astro Turf facilities. These amenities are open to the wider community, not just IT Sligo, and we are working with local sporting and community groups to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from them.”

An FAI Football Facilitator was also recently appointed at IT Sligo. Emma Mullin took up the position in the last month.
