IT Sligo’s Centre for Precision Engineering, Materials and Manufacturing Research (The PEM Centre) has secured approval from Enterprise Ireland to establish a Technology Gateway Centre.

The investment will form part of a National Technology Gateway network that is funded by Enterprise Ireland for supporting the technology and research needs of Irish Industry.

“This is a tremendous achievement  for the PEM Centre and a significant endorsement of the Institute’s technical capability and track record in working collaboratively with the manufacturing industry on applied research projects,” said Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of IT Sligo.

The investment by Enterprise Ireland into the PEM Centre will facilitate the continued development of the Centre in the provision of enhanced research services and technology offerings to the regional precision engineering and manufacturing industry base and further afield.

The establishment of the PEM Technology Gateway Centre builds on the Institute’s strong heritage and tradition in precision engineering and manufacturing over the past 45 years.

“It is also another endorsement of the Institute’s vision and ambition to be nationally and internationally recognised as a Centre of Excellence in Precision Engineering,” said Professor Cunnane.

IT Sligo’s proposal to become a Technology Gateway Centre was developed by the Institute’s PEM Centre Principal Investigator team, led by Dr David Tormey, who is a senior lecturer in mechanical engineering and academic director of the PEM Centre.

The other team members are: Dr Marion McAfee, Prof Suresh Pillai, Dr John Donovan and Dr Richard Sherlock.
