The scientific contributions of Ireland’s female academics have been honoured at a special event, hosted by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, in Áras an Uachtaráin.

The ‘Women in Science’ celebration highlighted the achievements and roles played by a growing number of women in the world of science.

In his address to an invited assembly of female experts in research and academia, President Higgins described them as important and influential, and as having a pivotal role in improving the world we live in.

“They are breaking new ground and paving the way for new generations of women who will also wish to use their talent and creativity to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths, and play their unique role in crafting a better world.” he said.

Dr Frances Lucy, Director of IT Sligo’s Centre for Environmental Research Innovation and Sustainability (CERIS) and Dr Mary Heneghan, Lecturer in Life Sciences, were IT Sligo’s invited representatives at the event.

“The President’s speech on the past, present and future contribution of Irish women to science was both uplifting and motivating,” said Dr Lucy. “We connected with fellow scientists from all the Institutes of Technology and Universities and felt proud to be there.”
