IT Sligo’s Sustainable Building Technology Course Earns Top Award

IT Sligo’s growing reputation for producing graduates skilled in sustainable building technology and energy conservation has been rewarded with a significant training award for one of its flagship degree programmes.

The Institute’s BSc in Advanced Wood and Sustainable Building Technology has been awarded Charted Institute of Building accreditation. CIOB is the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership. This is a prestigious award within the construction industry.

IT sligo’s programme combines academic and practical elements and, since its inception in 2011, has developed a strong track record of success. Graduates have already been employed with both national and international in the sector.

“Ireland is committed at national policy level to reducing its total energy consumption by 20% by the year 2020,” explains Kieran Gallagher, Programme Chair of the Advanced Wood and Sustainable Building Technology programme. “This commitment means there is a greater need for suitably qualified graduates in the construction area. Our course is addressing that demand,” he says.

The three-year programme provides students with technical and practical expertise in the areas of sustainable building technology. Purpose built workshops also them a unique opportunity to work as a team in a construction site environment. Students also get the chance to combine lecture theory with studio design work and construction.

This year, the visiting panel from the Chartered Institute of Building were particularly impressed by the high standards of research, design and fabrication of low energy domestic dwellings which went into the students final year projects. The Institute’s ability to deliver practical projects on such a large scale was also a key factor the programme receiving this new accreditation.
