Welcome to IT Sligo’s first MOOC!

mooc 1IT Sligo’s MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), takes the form of a free, six-week online course in Lean Sigma Quality. This MOOC is completely free and, as well as allowing you to learn about Lean Six Sigma, will give you a glimpse of what online learning from IT Sligo is like. The MOOC runs from October – December each year. Register below for the next running of the MOOC.

Lean Six Sigma has been around for more than two decades and since then it has been embraced by leading global companies in the manufacturing and service industries. It has become the foremost process improvement approach for organisations that wish to attain world class performance in quality and customer satisfaction. The tools and techniques are now expanding to the healthcare and government sectors where benefits have been achieved in productivity, efficiency and elimination of ‘waste’ – a term used in Lean Sigma quality which refers to anything that does not add value to the product or service. Who will be teaching this course?

Brian Coll is a lecturer in the School of Engineeringmooc 3

& Design at the Institute of Technology, Sligo, Ireland where he currently teaches on the quality, engineering and science courses. He lectures primarily to online students and was instrumental in developing the first video podcasts of lectures for online students in Ireland. Brian is a regular contributor to conferences on trends in online higher

education particularly as it relates to the use of new technology in helping to up-skill the workforce. Brian has over 20 years experience in quality management and has held senior positions at Director and VP level in multinational companies in Europe, USA and Mexico. He is also the holder of an SMT Vision Award (USA) for the work he undertook in the development of a time-temperature label which solved a long standing process control problem in electronics manufacturing. Brian holds a US patent for his work in this area, a B. Eng. (Industrial) from University College Galway and an M.Sc. (Quality) from the University of Limerick, Ireland.

Dr. John Donovan, who holds a PhD in Reliability Engineering from the University of Limerick, is one of the most experienced online lecturers in the School of Engineering and Design, having taught online since 2002. John also has significant industrial experience which he gained before joining IT Sligo in 1993. An active researcher, who regularly presents at conferences and has published in 36 refereed publications, his main focus has been in the area of Industrial Statistics, process simulation, modeling & optimization.mooc 2

How will the course be taught?

This course will use the same technology as IT Sligo’s existing award winning online courses. This course will consist of a series of 6 weekly sets of short recorded lectures as well as extra learning resources that can be accessed online at any time.  During the course, you will have access to discussion areas where they can ask question and get support from your classmates as you work through the materials.  You will be able to take regular quizzes to see how you are getting on and submit a final report that you can share with your classmates.


Will I get certification for completing this course?

If you reach a minimum grade in all the quizzes and final assignment you will be automatically awarded an electronic certificate of satisfactory completion that you can display online.
