A sports scholarship student from IT Sligo played a pivotal role in helping her Donegal club, Termon, lift its first ever All-Ireland senior title last Sunday.

Geraldine McLaughlin, who’s studying Recreation & Leisure at the Institute, was the star performer in Termon’s 3-12 to 1-14 success over Mourneabbey of Cork in Sunday’s All-Ireland senior club football decider, which was played in Tuam. She scored 3-8 of her team’s tally and was named Player of the Match.

“I can’t believe it,” Geraldine told RTÉ sport. “We went in at half-time four points down, but that definitely wasn’t us. We knew we had to play our game in the second half and if we did we’d come through.

“They were a good side and we knew they would be. I think we went out at the start thinking of their game plan, but then we just changed to ours. That turned the game. The backs were unbelievable.

Geraldine is one of IT Sligo’s Gold Sports Scholarship award students. The Sports Scholarship Programme is designed to nurture talented sports people who are prepared to make the commitment to the Institute’s sports clubs in their chosen discipline.
