Finn Mellon

19th Jun 2019

What is the course title you are studying: Health Science and Physical Activity
What year are you in: 1st year

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course:
I am actually from Kerry, so quite a distance away from the college but I moved up here to chase the world class surf here and to be able to surf and study here was a pretty perfect match. I also chose the course I did because I am a real sporty person who also enjoys sciences, So the course pretty much suited me down to the ground.

Finn is the current Irish Youth Champion, placed 5th in PWA Tenerife youths event and Vice British Wave champion.

Finn has said “I sail because of the excitement I get from catching and riding waves, And the drive to always improve my sailing is another reason I enjoy sailing. It is great fun sharing waves with my Dad and pushing each other to be better than one another.

Other than Windsurfing my main hobby is defiantly Surfing, I always love to spend time at the beach so when there isn’t enough wind to sail I always go Surfing. I feel surfing really works with my Windsurfing, My surfing gives wave knowledge and a different wave sailing style.”

What specifically about the course do you particularly enjoy:
I really enjoyed the practical elements to my course. I was surprised at how much of my course was actually based on practical work such as spending time in the gym.

What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know:
I think the best thing is how practical the course actually is. Very different to what I was use to coming out of the leaving cert.

If you were speaking with a first year student about to start your course, what advice/information would you give them:
I would say enter the course with an open mind and be ready to interact with plenty of new faces, and to enjoy the year as it goes so fast !

If you are involved in Sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that.
I spend a lot of mine time playing sport, My two sports are surfing and windsurfing, they really are the loves of my life hah ! I try to spend as much time as possible in the water and in the open air, Outside is certainly my happy place ! Through these sports I have been lucky enough to been given the chances to travel the world competing and training my surfing and windsurfing. I have competed at a world cup level for windsurfing since I was 14, and I hope I can make the move up into the main adult division one day ! Through my travels I have made some of my best friends and met some incredible people which I’m sure I will remember for the rest of my life.

What are your plans after IT Sligo and any long term goals you are aiming for:
Mmh I hope I can continue to travel the world and hopefully mange to find a way to balance my work with my time doing the things I love, such as surfing and traveling !
